Norwalk Variety Store Likely Won't Reopen Soon After Fire: Report

The incident has also affected other stores located within the strip mall where the fire took place.

NORWALK, CT — Norwalk Health Department officials said Main Street Grocery & Variety will likely be closed for some time after a fire early Thursday morning left extensive damage, the Norwalk Hour reported. Officials said the store will remain closed until they can meet state Public Health Code guidelines to reopen.

According to the Hour, nearby businesses African Queen Hair Braiding and Steve’s Market also suffered some smoke damage as a result of the incident, however they are expected to reopen within a few days.

On Thursday at approximately 2:30 a.m., a total of 37 fire personnel were on scene as crews worked to extinguish the fire at 61 Main Street.

According to Deputy Chief Todd M. Smith, the fire was initially reported to be contained to stacks of magazines and newspapers, however firefighters discovered the blaze had extended into the walls and ceiling of the building.

Smith said the roof of the structure was subsequently opened, at which point heavy smoke and heat came from the skylights, allowing firefighters to see the section of the blaze and extinguish it.

According to Smith, two upstairs apartments were evacuated at the onset of the fire. Two firefighters were also treated on scene, with one firefighter being transported to a hospital with a knee injury, Smith said.

The incident was turned over to the Fire Prevention Bureau for investigation, Smith said.
