Norwalk Weighs Removing Controversial Mural from City Hall
Some residents have called the historical painting racist. It was painted by local artist Justin Gruelle in the 1930s.

NORWALK, CT - An historical mural that hangs on the second floor of Norwalk City Hall depicts the slavery era, and several residents and officials believe it should be removed from the government building because they find it racist.
The matter was discussed Thursday night during a public hearing before the Norwalk Human Relations Commission. And a majority of speakers voiced a desire for the mural to be removed from city hall and placed in a museum or historical society, reports The Hour.
Called "Steamboat Days on the Mississippi," mural was painted by local artist Justin Gruelle in the 1930s.
The commission will make a recommendation on what to do about the mural to Mayor Harry Rilling in the coming weeks.
