Obituary: Muriel Farrell O’Connor, 92, Of Norwalk

She was a devoted wife, mother, daughter, sister, aunt and friend.

Muriel Farrell O’Connor, 92, of Norwalk, passed away peacefully at Norwalk Hospital surrounded by family and close friends on January 3, 2019. She was born at home on Eversley Ave in Norwalk, CT on October 19, 1926 to the late Daniel J. and Muriel Tennant Farrell.

She graduated from Norwalk High School in June of 1944 and St Joseph’s College (Hartford, CT) in 1948 with a degree in Home Economics.

A member of the greatest generation, she worked summer jobs for Nordon Systems in Norwalk and proudly grew a victory garden at her home.

She met the love of her life, Tom, while in college on a blind date to New York City. They married in 1950 and resided in Norwalk. They were married for 58 wonderful years and had four children.

Muriel taught Home Economics at Norwalk High School until she stopped teaching to be a full time mother and homemaker. She was active in numerous community and church organizations, especially her beloved Saint Philip Parish. She returned to teaching in the early 1970’s for 10 plus years at Roton Middle School. She was active in the Norwalk Hospital Women’s Board. She was a member of Shorehaven Golf Club where she enjoyed golfing, bowling and in later years playing bridge.

Muriel was an exceptional cook, baker and loved hosting parties, dinners, holidays and any type of family gathering. She was a devoted wife, mother, daughter, sister, aunt and friend.

She is predeceased by her parents and her beloved husband, Thomas F. O’Connor. She is survived by her four children: Maureen O’Connor-Strout of Tucson, AZ, Dan O’Connor of Norwalk, Patricia O’Connor of Bridgeport, and Katie Blagden along with her husband David and their daughter Megan of Norwalk. She is also survived by her sister, Noreen Parris, her husband Ronald of Wilton and many nieces and nephews.

A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Tuesday, January 8 at 11 a.m. at St. Philip Church in Norwalk, followed by burial at St. Johns Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Monday, January 7 at the Magner Funeral Home (12 Mott Avenue, Norwalk).
