NORWALK, CT — The 2023 municipal election is heating up in Norwalk and there are plenty of local races with candidates eager to serve in elected office.

Norwalk Patch asked candidates to answer questions about their campaigns and will be publishing candidate profiles as Election Day draws near.

Democrat Johan Lopez, 39, is a Norwalk resident running for the Common Council at Large.

What is your occupation?

Research consultant for the World Bank Group.

Do you have a family? If so, please tell us about them.

Does anyone in your family work in politics or government?

No.

Have you ever held a public office, whether appointive or elective?

No.

Now we'd like to ask a few questions about your reasons for running and your general views on politics and government. First, why are you seeking this office?

Contribute my experience in international development towards ensuring Norwalk's trajectory always remains innovative, welcoming, equitable, and progressive.

Please complete this statement: The single most pressing issue facing my constituents is ___, and this is what I intend to do about it.

Advancing equitable growth, while undertaking effective public debt management that is conducive towards financial stability and sustainable fiscal policy. This can be accomplished by implementing a variety of strategies and best practices.

What are the major differences between you and the other candidates seeking this post?

The acquisition of theoretical knowledge and real-world experience in international development, advocating towards improvements in pedestrian infrastructure, and a deep and unwavering commitment to the core progressive values and policies that will continue to move our community forward.

What other issues do you intend to address during your campaign?

All issues that can be addressed through the council's legislative authority, or through community advocacy. City issues are interconnected and all warrant attention, despite their complexity.

What accomplishments in your past would you cite as evidence you can handle this job?

I've authored thematic economic case studies to assess how relevant, effective, and coherent financing helps client governments achieve their development objectives. I provided added-value by using automation to streamline business tasks in every organization where I have been employed.

In addition, my work with high ranking officials of complex foreign governments, and international stakeholders has shown me the critical importance of simply listening in order to arrive at a mutual and respectful understanding.

What is the best advice anyone ever gave you?

No matter the challenges that befall you, always remind yourself to operate from a place of strength, wisdom, and courage.

Is there anything else you would like voters to know about yourself and your positions?

I will do my best to undertake effective public engagement to respond to the needs and aspirations of all members of our community, including those without a voice. I look forward to helping provide solutions to our city's challenges and dismantle any attempts to divide our city.
