Suspect In Kathleen Flynn Murder Case Held On $5 Million Bond

Though considered a cold case, Norwalk police reportedly were aware of the suspect for decades. He was extradited From Maine on Friday.

NORWALK, CT — The suspect arrested this week in connection with the 1986 murder of 11-year-old Norwalk resident Kathleen Flynn was extradited from Maine on Friday and is being held at Norwalk police headquarters on a $5 million bond, according to Lt. Terrence Blake.

Stetson, ME resident Marc Karun, 53, was arrested at his home on Wednesday on a fugitive from justice charge, and he now faces charges of murder with special circumstances and first-degree kidnapping.

"On June 14, 2019, Marc Karun waived extradition from Maine and was brought back to Norwalk by Lieutenant Weisgerber and Sergeant Tolnay," Blake stated. "Karun has been processed on the below charges and is being held on bond at the Norwalk Police Department. If Karun is unable to post bond, he will be presented at the Norwalk Courthouse on Monday June 17, 2019."

Karun is accused of sexually assaulting and strangling Flynn, and he was familiar to Norwalk police for more than 30 years before his apprehension, writes The Hour.

He became a suspect within weeks of the September 1986 incident, in part because he was accused of similar crimes the same year. Karun also reportedly was convicted of sexual assault in Derby two years after the Flynn murder, for which he served a decade in prison.

He cannot be charged with sexual assault in the Flynn case because the statute of limitation has expired, reports the Bangor Daily News.

Karun was living in Norwalk at the time of Flynn's murder, and he had even attended Ponus Ridge Middle School as a child, the same school where Flynn was walking home from when she was attacked. Her body was found near the school.

Norwalk police officials have scheduled a press conference for Tuesday, June 18, at police headquarters to discuss the case.
