6 NFA Seniors Receive Community-Based Scholarships

The recipients were announced by Norwich Free Academy's Director of Guidance, Jeanne Elliott.

From Norwich Free Academy: Six seniors at Norwich Free Academy received scholarships this week from various organizations and schools announced Jeanne Elliott, Director of Guidance.

Tessa Carty of Norwich has received Eastern Connecticut Workforce Investment Board (EWIB)-Pietre Stem Leadership Scholarship. The award, sponsored by the EWIB and Pfizer Senior Director Armelde Pitre, is intended to increase the pipeline of skilled professionals with the science, technology, engineering, and math credentials for Eastern Connecticut employers including manufacturers and pharmaceuticals. The scholarship is for college-bound high school seniors who will pursue a course of study in a STEM field. A field-hockey and golf scholar-athlete, Tessa plans to attend Cornell University where she will study civil engineering.

Tenzin Thokme of Norwich has received the Connecticut England Red Sox Service Scholarship sponsored by the Ford Motor Company Fund. Selection is based upon academic performance, demonstrated community service, and financial eligibility. Tenzin plans to attend UConn Avery Point and continue at UConn Storrs where she will major in allied health. She will receive her scholarship at a Red Sox Game in Boston this summer.

Natan Lieske of Bozrah has received notification of his selection to receive the Eugene Atwood Recognition Award. The Eugene Atwood Fund aids deserving industrious young people, who are making an honest effort to accomplish the best results in life. Inventor Eugene Atwood, the owner of Atwood Machines of Stonington, CT, founded the fund in 1916. Lieske, a track athlete and Eagle Scout, has an extensive resume of community service. He will attend the University of Maryland, College Park, and major in law enforcement.

Brendan Green of Canterbury, a hockey and football scholar-athlete, will attend the Worcester Polytechnic Institute in the fall to studying engineering. He has signed a national letter of intent to play football. Green has received a scholarship awarded by A Capela do Santo Antonio. Roberta Vincent, the granddaughter of the founder of the St. Anthony’s Chapel, was on hand to honor Green with the scholarship. The group awarded its first scholarship in 2010.

Hannah Harens of Norwich was honored by a visit from Brian Boecherer ’99, Executive Director, and Melanie Ochoa, Program Assistant, Academic Standards, Office of Early College Programs & UConn Early College Experience at University of Connecticut. She is the recipient of the highly competitive UConn Early College Experience Scholarship for Excellence in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM). An exceptional student, a competitive nationally recognized clay target shooter, and a member of the American Sign Language Club, Harens will attend the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the fall to study engineering.

Gabriella Farinha of Preston has been awarded a scholarship from the Chelsea Groton Bank based upon excellence in academics, leadership, and extracurricular activities. Gabriele has been active in community service and NFA Playshop. She is a member of the American Sign Language Club who plans to study Speech and Language Pathology at the University of Connecticut in the fall. Miria Toth, New London/Norwich, Connecticut Area Community Education Officer at Chelsea Groton Bank was on campus to award Gabriella the scholarship.
