Norwich Man Killed After Car Crashes Into Trees, Catches Fire In Voluntown

An off-duty firefighter stopped and pulled the victim out of the vehicle, according to state police.

VOLUNTOWN, CT — A Norwich motorist was killed after his vehicle went off the road and struck multiple trees Sunday evening, according to state police.

An off-duty firefighter pulled the victim out of the vehicle, which caught fire, state police said.

Police identified the victim as James Orowson Jr., 54, of 120 Cliff St., Norwich.

The one-vehicle crash happened Aug. 30 around 7:29 p.m. on Route 138, or Beach Pond Road, in Voluntown, police said.

The victim's 2006 Honda Civic LX was westbound on Route 138 at the time of the accident.

The off-duty firefighter stopped to help and extricated the driver, according to police, but the man was pronounced deceased at the scene.

State police said a post-collision fire engulfed the vehicle, and the Fire Department arrived to extinguish it.
