
NORWICH, CT — With schools set to open on Wednesday, Aug. 29, the Norwich Police Department has issued the following traffic advisory on the department's Facebook page to remind drivers to be careful on the roads:
The Norwich Police Department would like to take this opportunity to remind citizens that the school year will begin on August 29th, 2018. Please be aware of school buses with flashing red lights and school zone speeds.
Under CGS 14-279 (Improper Passing of a Standing School Bus) when a school bus is stopped and has it's flashing lights illuminated, no motor vehicle may pass said bus in either direction. The fine for passing a school bus is $465.00.

Under CGS 14-218aSZ (Traveling Fast in a School Zone) the fines range from $232.00 to 376.00. School zones are clearly marked with signs at the start of the school zone and the end.
We wish the best for children enrolled in our school system. May they have a safe and healthy school year.
Because we are committed to ensuring the safety of school children, Norwich Police Officers will be assigned to monitor school zones and school buses. We will also be placing the NPD speed trailer in school zones as a friendly reminder that school is back in session.
