Blaze Rips Through Norwich Home; Firefighter Rescued

NORWICH, CT — A firefighter was rescued from the second floor of a building after a blaze broke out in Norwich on Wednesday night, according to the Yantic Fire Engine Company #1. Fourteen Yantic firefighters responded at 8: 12 p.m. to assist Taftville Fire Department with a residential fire on Norwich Avenue.

Several fire departments were called in to extinguish the fire at a two-story, two-family house, according to The New London Day.

A Norwich firefighter put out a distress call on the second floor. "Our members quickly grabbed a ground ladder and raised it to the second floor window to assist in his escape," Yantic Fire Engine Company #1 wrote on Facebook. "At this time the firefighter was able to break out the window and immediately self extricate down the ladder from his situation safely."

Crews then switched to firefighting in defensive mode until the fire was extinguished about 90 minutes later.

The fire has displaced two of the home's occupants. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
