New Telephone Scam Hits Norwich: Police

"NPD is investigating these calls. We would like to make residents aware; as the actors are reported to be quite convincing," cops say.

NORWICH, CT — The Norwich Police Department is warning residents to be on the lookout for a telephone scam involving a fake hostage situation.

In the past day, the department fielded three separate reports of residents receiving the calls from a Connecticut phone number.

"The call included a female and male actor. The female pretends to be in distress, the male takes the phone and claims to have the daughter or granddaughter of the person they call," wrote Norwich police in a post on the department's Facebook page. "Each call contained the same detailed story, but ultimately ends in a demand for money."
