Amity Babe Ruth Team Excels

The team consists of players from Bethany, Orange and Woodbridge.

The CT Babe Ruth 13 year old All-Star team won the summer league championship Sunday, August 3 at Brinley Field in Orange over Newtown 3-2. Newtown lead off the top of the first with a leadoff single, stolen base and a single by the their number three hitter to take a 1-0 lead.

Amity answered back in the bottom of the first with a two out single by Ben Runda and a double by Joey Schittina to tie the score. The game stayed tied until the bottom of the fifth when Brendan Miller lead off with a walk, took second on a wild pitch and tagged up and scored on a close play when Sam Koorejian flied out to center field. Amity was leading 2-1 going into the bottom of the 6th when Ben Runda walked, stole second. Pat Freeman doubled to drive in Amity’s 3rd run of the game.

Newtown shut the door as Amity had 2nd and third with no outs by striking out two and popping up one. Newtown lead off the 7th with a walk off Amity’s starting pitching pitcher Sam Koorejian who pitched all 7 innings throwing 76 pitches. Sam struck out the next batter but the next batter drove in Newtown’s 2nd run on a double. The second out came on a ground out to short that allowed the tying run to cross over to 3rd with two outs.

The game ended on an infield pop out in the Bermuda triangle between pitcher’s mound, shortstop and third base caught by Brendan Miller reaching high catching in the end of his glove for a 3-2 Amity win. On Thursday Amity beat Redding 3-0 after losing to them 9 days earlier 9-4.

Jared Smith threw all 7 innings with 68 pitches allowed one hit, no walks, and striking out 6. Amity scored early to put the pressure on with a single by Ryan Ford but cut down stealing second. Ben Runda rallied us with two outs with a single followed by a double by Joey Schittina to drive him in.

Pat Freeman singled to drive in Joe to take a 2-0 lead in the first. In the third Joey Schittina lead off with a single, stole second, took third on a pass ball and scored on a single by James Van Hise to make the score 3-0 which was all the scoring in the game.

In addition to the contributions noted the following players helped out as follows: Brian Early was sold in Left and right fields and reached base once on HP. Joey Eschweiler played a very good second base and had a base hit in the Redding game to start a rally. Adam Leszczak played a great first base scooping a throws and reached base twice with a base hit and HP. Billy McKeon was versatile playing right field and second base making all of the plays.
