ORANGE, CT — After weeks of steady declines from record spring highs, gasoline prices in Orange and across Connecticut are turning back upward, according to the latest data from AAA and the U.S. Energy Information Administration.
Connecticut's statewide average for a gallon of regular unleaded stood at $3.937 as of July 10, according to AAA — up from $3.902 the day before and from a week-ago New England regional average of $3.855 tracked by the EIA. The reversal, however modest, follows a sharp run-up that pushed the state average past $4.60 in May before a prolonged retreat brought prices considerably lower through late June and early July. Compared to a year ago, when the Connecticut average was $3.162, drivers are still paying about 78 cents more per gallon today.
The state's current average of $3.937 runs about 5 cents above the national average of $3.884 tracked by AAA as of July 10. The EIA, which publishes weekly retail fuel price data each Monday, put the national average for regular gasoline at $3.777 per gallon for the week ending July 6 — down from $3.914 on June 22. The EIA placed the New England regional average, which includes Connecticut, at $3.806 per gallon for the week ending July 6, down from $3.952 on June 22.
Orange falls within the New Haven-Meriden metropolitan area as tracked by AAA, which placed the metro's regular gas average at approximately $4.007 as of late June — slightly above the statewide figure at that time and about 23 cents above the most recent national average published by the EIA. Metro area prices have tracked the statewide trajectory since, declining from late-spring peaks before the recent uptick.
