This Week In Orange: Flu Clinics Begin, Senior Center Lineup, College Street Variance And More

Orange flu clinics start Tuesday at High Plains, the senior center has a full week and the ZBA hears a College Street setback variance.

ORANGE, CT — Flu clinics begin Tuesday at High Plains Community Center, the senior center has a busy week of classes and crafts, and the Zoning Board of Appeals hears a College Street variance request.

1. Weekly Flu Clinics Begin At High Plains
When: Tuesday, Oct. 6, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., then Oct. 13, 20 and 27
Where: Probate Room, High Plains Community Center, 525 Orange Center Road
What to know: The Orange Health Department and the Orange Visiting Nurse Association are holding flu clinics on Tuesdays this month, according to the senior center's October newsletter. Bring a photo ID and insurance card. Flu shots are usually covered by insurance, Medicare or private insurance. Each person will get a vaccine information sheet for their records, and the shot will be recorded in CT WiZ, the state immunization database that providers can access.

2. Senior Center Week: Author Talk, Sun Catchers, 'Young Frankenstein'
When: Monday, Oct. 5, through Friday, Oct. 9
Where: Orange Senior Center, High Plains Community Center, 525 Orange Center Road
What to know: On Monday at 1 p.m., Eleanor Bloom discusses poet Edgar Lee Masters, and tech tutoring for phones, tablets and computers follows at 3:30 p.m. A Zentangle session is Tuesday at 1 p.m. Melinda Bottone of Masonicare is finishing a seven-week bereavement group, which meets Tuesdays from 10 to 11:30 a.m. through Oct. 20. For information, call her at 203-679-5366. On Wednesday at 1 p.m., Jill Andrzejewski leads a sun catcher craft ($20, limited to 20 people). The hiking group meets Thursday at 10 a.m. at Shelton Lakes in Shelton, and Friday's 1 p.m. comedy movie is "Young Frankenstein." Registration is required for most programs; call 203-891-4784.

3. ZBA Hears College Street Setback Variance
When: Monday, Oct. 5, 7 p.m.
Where: Lower Level, Town Hall, 617 Orange Center Road
What to know: The Zoning Board of Appeals will hold a public hearing on a request for a variance of the street line setback in the residential zone at 831 College St., according to the agenda. The board will also review minutes from its July 20 and Aug. 3 meetings. The hearing will air on Orange Government Access Television (Optimum Channel 79, Frontier Channel 6063 and Xfinity/Comcast channels 74 and 1077) and stream on OGAT's YouTube channel. 4. Government TV Committee Discusses Amity Board Cablecasts
When: Thursday, Oct. 8, 7:30 p.m.
Where: Lower Level Meeting Room, Town Hall, 617 Orange Center Road
What to know: The Orange Government Access Television Committee, chaired by Robert Lim, will discuss cablecasting Amity Regional Board of Education meetings and get an update on the PURA annual report. The agenda also includes a CAC grant, the coordinator's report on the budget and equipment inventory, and a third read of the committee's "OGAT Vision." The meeting opens with public comment.

5. Schedule Changes: P&Z Canceled, Fitness Center Closed Friday
When: Tuesday, Oct. 6; Friday, Oct. 9; Monday, Oct. 12
Where: Town Hall, 617 Orange Center Road; High Plains Community Center, 525 Orange Center Road
What to know: The Town Plan and Zoning Commission's Oct. 6 meeting has been canceled, and its next regular meeting is Oct. 20, according to a town notice. The town Fitness Center at High Plains is closed Friday, Oct. 9. The senior center will be closed Monday, Oct. 12, for Columbus Day.
