The St. Barbara community is sponsoring a free seminar for parishioners and the general public on Internet and mobile phone safety.
The Internet and mobile phones are now everywhere. Their explosion is the result of the great benefits each presents. However, with each benefit there is also potential danger. Pornography, predators, and cyber-bullying are among the most challenging that parents and kids need to face when adopting these new technologies.
Protecting kids can oftentimes seem to be a daunting task.
On Wednesday, October 19th at 7:00pm, St. Barbara Greek Orthodox Church will be sponsoring an Internet and mobile phone safety seminar conducted by the Chief Information Officer of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, Mr. Theo Nicolakis, who lectures nationally on this topic. This seminar will cover the basics of Internet safety with a special emphasis on mobile phones. Parents will walk away with hard facts and practical steps they can take for both their kids and for themselves to protect their families.
Practical steps parents will learn:
1) Protecting and securing your home computers from pornography access
2) Ways to protect your kids cell phones
3) Steps to take to prevent predators from learning your location from your photographs
4) Advice on using privacy on social media sites such as Facebook
5) Enabling parental controls (and their limits) on cell phones--including the iPhone
6) What options are available from carriers like AT&T and Verizon to help you
This free seminar is open to the public and will take place in the St. Barbara Social Hall.
