Orange Budget Approved, Proposed Charter Changes Fall Short: Report
Residents voted to support the proposed charter changes but not enough people came out to vote for the changes to be approved.

ORANGE, CT — By a five to one margin Orange residents approved the town's $68 million budget for fiscal 2017-18 during referendum Thursday, the New Haven Register reports. The vote was 1,088 to 201 in support of the budget.
The big unknown remains what will happen in Hartford concerning the state's multi-year nearly $5 billion deficit and whether Orange will receive less financial support from the state.
Proposed changes to the charter did not pass simply because 15 percent of the registered voters needed to vote and they fell nearly 250 votes short. Those who did vote did support changing the terms of the First Selectman, Board of Selectmen, Tax Collector, Town Clerk, and Registrar of Voters from two to four years.
