Orange Budget Possibly Headed to Referendum: Report

A petition drive is underway which would have voters decide the budget at the polls instead of at the Annual Town Meeting.

ORANGE, CT - It's looking likely Orange will have a budget referendum this year instead of deciding the issue at a the Annual Town Meeting on May 9, reports The Orange Times.

Democratic Town Committee Chairwoman Jody Dietch told the Orange Times Editor Joseph Cole that she was confident she'd make the May 6 deadline of garnering 200 signatures forcing a budget referendum.

Last year 209 people voted on the budget at the Annual Town Meeting. The proposed $66.26 million budget for fiscal 2016-17 includes a 1.96 percent increase and the tax rate is projected to increase to 32.2 mills or less than a 1 mill increase.

No date has been scheduled for a possible budget referendum as of yet as Dietch's petition has to be verified first.
