Orange Police Report 41 Arrests, 68 Citations and More Than 3,100 Calls for Service In July

ORANGE, CT — Orange police made 41 criminal arrests and issued 68 motor vehicle citations in July, according to statistics presented to the town's Board of Police Commissioners at its Aug. 10 meeting.

Assistant Police Chief Max Martins told commissioners that officers also handled 70 motor vehicle accidents during the month. Police reported three commercial burglaries, no stolen motor vehicles and two recovered motor vehicles.

The department received 3,106 calls for service, resulting in 496 written reports. Martins also updated commissioners on Investigative Services Unit activities and cases, according to the meeting minutes.

Police Chief Robert Gagne reported that the Records Division collected $588 in July. That included $98 from report sales, $100 from parking tags, $340 from permits, $40 from fingerprints and $10 from record checks.

Gagne told commissioners the department's budget was in good order at the beginning of the new budget year.

Commissioners also received updates on two ongoing initiatives. The department is prepared and in the queue for NexGen Public Safety Solutions, with implementation anticipated this fall, according to the minutes.

Gagne also said Town Attorney Owen Weaver was working to resolve several issues involving the town's solicitation ordinance. A database has been developed that would allow Orange residents to register that they do not want solicitation on their property.

In new business, police officials said the department is working with the Orange Fire Department on a Public Safety Youth Academy. The course will be offered to high school students as an introduction to careers in police and fire departments.

The commission also noted that Detective Denny Peterson was selected for the Amity Chamber of Commerce Officer of the Year Award. Gagne said Peterson would be honored Sept. 17 at 8:30 a.m. at the Marriott.

The board received correspondence from Jim and Laura Mooney thanking Officer Crainich for assistance with a lost cellphone.

Commissioners Marian Hurley, Christopher Carveth, Nyjahwahn Walker, Christopher Hansen and Chairman Roy Cuzzocreo attended the meeting. The board unanimously approved the minutes of its July 13 meeting. The meeting adjourned at 5:25 p.m.
