Yale Concert Band to present a Winter Concert

· Gordon Jacob wrote William Byrd Suite to commemorate the tercentenary of the English Renaissance composer’s death. The suite is based on works by Byrd and is composed of six movements that range in character from the dignified, majestic Earle of Oxford’s March to the charming Jhon Come Kisse Me Now.

· Ye Banks and Braes O’ Bonnie Doon is a slow, sustained Scottish folk tune written by Percy Grainger. Originally composed in 1903 for “men’s chorus and whistlers,” the piece was arranged for concert band by the composer in 1936.

· Kurt Weill wrote Little Threepenny Music for Wind Ensemble as part of a collaboration with the German playwright and theater director Bertolt Brecht. The opera, first performed in Berlin in 1928, presents a dark, tangled plot of beggars and thieves. Weill’s score draws from jazz influences of the time and features the macabre “Mack the Knife.”

· Lansing McLoskey wrote What We Do Is Secret in 2011 for wind ensemble and solo brass quintet. The piece draws its title from the 1978 album by the punk band The Germs. Each movement is named after a song from an early Los Angeles punk band. This performance will feature Yale School of Music students Daniel Venora ’16 and Aaron Krumsieg ‘16, trumpet, Reese Farnell ‘16, French horn, John Caughman ‘16, Tuba, and Omar Dejesus ‘16, Trombone.
