VIDEO: Young Reporter Gets First Big Career Break

A Peck Place student contributes to Time for Kids, an offshoot of the national magazine.

At 11 years old, Brian Forbes is already making headway into a journalism career.  The student writes  for Time for Kids and is looking forward to more.

“[Journalism] wasn’t exactly my dream at first but my mom convinced me it’s something I should do…I never considering being a reporter but now it’s something I like,” Forbes said.

There were more than 500 applicants for the kid version of the national magazine and Forbes was one of 12 selected. The story that landed him the position was about Principal Albert deCant.

So far, Forbes’ favorite story has been an interview with New York City-based artist Nathan Sawaya, who specializes in incredible LEGO sculptures. In a video Time produced of the interview, Forbes asks a number of insightful questions to the artist. The sixth grader has a system for determining what to ask.

“To come up with the questions I have to study the person and then I ask some more whimsical questions even though I know the answer,” Forbes said. “The majority are questions I’d like to know the answer to.”

Forbes said he’s interested in pursuing journalism in the future and his dream is to interview a former president – such as Jimmy Carter or Bill Clinton.

His parents, Janet and Dewey are quite proud.

“It’s really exciting,” Dewey said. “He’s very interested in anything to do with history, science and politics.”

The journalism industry is on uncertain ground, so will his parents be supportive?

“Absolutely,” said Dewey.
