By WENDY ANN MITCHELL (Patch Staff)
You said this year you’d get in shape. You bought new sneakers, got a Fit Bit and some new yoga pants. You joined that great new gym that has everything. You vowed this year would be different. But it’s too cold! You’re too busy or too tired.
According to a study done by YouGov, 63 percent of those who make resolutions commit to get fit or lose weight. Of those goal setters, 43 percent throw in their gym towels before the end of January.
Days of the Year.com says January 17 is National Ditch Your New Year’s Resolutions Day.
But before you give up completely, we’ve compiled a list that will help you get back on track and stay on target if you’ve strayed from your fitness plan.
3 Apps
Lose It: Max Barry, owner of Max’s Best Boot Camp, recommends this free app to his clients. The app tracks your weight loss goals, calories consumed an offers peer support via an online community... if you like that sort of thing. There is also an option to scan food items using the bar code to keep track of how much fat and calories are consumed each day.
Couch to 5K: This app is for beginners who want to achieve the end goal of running their first 5K. “Too many people have been turned off of running simply by trying to start off too fast. Their bodies rebel, and they wind up miserable, wondering why anyone would possibly want to run in the first place,” the website explains. They suggest a gradual start, 20 to 30 minutes a day, three times a week.
Nike Training Club: This app helps you chose a workout or a four-week program that will help you lose weight. There are over 100 workouts and challenges. The free app has something for everyone, including beginners, intermediate or advanced users.
4 Tips
Tracy DeLuise, owner of Bethel Fitness and Wellness Center, offers the following tips to help you stick to your weight loss goals.
- Make sure your resolution is attainable. Don’t go overboard right away or you’ll be too sore to continue.
- Get an accountability partner. Post your intentions online so people can support and encourage you.
- Don’t ever give up. If you get off track, always get back on. Try and try again.
- Reward yourself once a new goal is achieved. Buy a new piece of clothing you may not have fit in before and celebrate the slimmer new you!
