Oxford Team Wins Bronze

OXFORD, CT — Oxford High School’s Unified Basketball Team returned home with a bronze medal from the 2026 Special Olympics after what school officials described as a historic run for the program.

Oxford Public Schools said the team was the only team from Connecticut to participate in the games.

The team secured the bronze medal with a 28-19 victory over Mississippi, closing out the competition with a hard-fought win.

School officials said the team drew praise throughout the week for its teamwork, energy and character. Special Olympics game evaluators approached coaches Jen LaCapra and Ivy Fleming after each game to commend the athletes’ effort and positive spirit, according to Oxford Public Schools.

“Your team is very fun to watch; they work as a team,” one evaluator said, according to the district.

The team also made an impression during the Opening Ceremonies, when Oxford athletes started a large conga line on the field that drew in athletes from surrounding states, with chants of “Connecticut” filling the stadium, school officials said.

“I will never forget the experience, the team and the joy felt throughout the court and beyond,” LaCapra said. “Oxford’s team is truly special and I am bursting with pride for these young athletes.”

The Oxford community is invited to celebrate the team Thursday, July 2, with a community parade.

The parade will begin at 6:30 p.m. at Quarry Walk and end at Old Center School. Residents are encouraged to line the route to cheer on the athletes.

School officials said the team’s achievement reflects inclusion, determination, dedication and school spirit.
