Oxford Homes Still Without Power

OXFORD, CT — Fifty-five homes in Oxford remained without power Tuesday evening as the town continued working with Eversource following severe Fourth of July weekend storms, First Selectman George Temple said in a CodeRED message to residents.

“We haven't forgotten you,” Temple said in the message. “I've been in contact with Eversource since Sunday and have been assured that crews are on their way to Oxford.”

The update came after powerful storms caused widespread outages across Connecticut during the holiday weekend. More than 9,000 power outages remained statewide Tuesday morning after outages peaked at around 100,000 customers, according to Eversource and United Illuminating.

The town also reminded residents of several upcoming events this week.

Oxford will hold its Reading of the Declaration of Independence at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 8, at Jackson Cove, 26 Jackson Cove Road. The event will include music by Acoustic Brew, games, crafts, a patriotic dessert contest, and free hot dogs, chips, water, and red, white and blue Italian ice. The Declaration reading is scheduled for 6 p.m., according to a prior event announcement.

Free shuttle service to Jackson Cove will be available from the Oxford Senior Center and Oxford Library beginning at 4:30 p.m., with the final return trip leaving Jackson Cove at 7:30 p.m., according to the CodeRED message.

The Oxford Center Fire Department’s annual car show is scheduled for 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, July 11, at the Oxford Center Fire House. The fire company’s website lists the event as a fundraiser with food trucks and no rain date.

Also Saturday, Oxford Parks and Recreation is hosting a bus trip to Citi Field to see the New York Mets play the Boston Red Sox. Tickets were still available as of Tuesday’s town message, with details available through Oxford Parks and Recreation.
