Army Veteran, Fire Captain and Finance Board Chair Giovacchino Dies at 91

John G. Giovacchino, a 91-year-old resident of Oxford, passed away at home on March 25, 2011.
He was born Oct. 21, 1919, in Ansonia, son of the late Gennaro and Caroline Pizzoferrato Giovacchino. A resident of Oxford since 1956, he attended Ansonia public schools and graduated from Pine Manuel Training School. He was an Army veteran of the 706th Tank Battalion during World War II. He worked as a foreman for Charles J. Dickgiesser Co. of Derby.
John was a past captain of the and served on the Oxford Board of Finance and also as its chairman. He was a former member of Holy Rosary Church in Ansonia, and was an avid outdoors person who loved to hunt and trap.
He is survived by his son, John C. Giovacchino and daughter, Carol Edwards, both of Oxford, his brother, Gennaro Giovacchino of Seymour, six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. In addition to his wife, Caroline, he was predeceased by brothers Paul, William, Angelo, Salvatore, Joseph and Ottavio Giovacchino.
Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday from the Jenkins King & Malerba Funeral Home, 12 Franklin St., Ansonia (www.jenkinskingfh.com). Friends may call on Wednesday from 9 to 10 a.m. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, Ansonia.
