MAY 18, 2026&nbsp; PASTEL DEMONSTRATION BY CHRISTINE IVERS Christine Ivers is presenting a Pastel Demonstration hosted by the Shelton Art League at 1 pm on May 18, 2026 at the Shelton Community Center, 41 Church Street, Shelton, CT, 2FL, Rm #2.&nbsp; The league’s general meeting starts at 11:45 am.&nbsp; In 1973 Christine received a BFA in painting and two-dimensional design from Hartford Art School and preceded to work in the advertising field for over 40 years, eventually returning to her passion for pastels and oils.&nbsp; Her work has been described as vibrant and textural with dynamic light. The effects she achieves can run the gamut between high contrast and a gentle softness. She is the Past-President of the CT Pastel Society, holding Signature Artist Membership, a Master Pastelist of the Pastel Society of America, and an Elected Artist Member at Lyme Art Association, Allied Artists of America, Audubon Artists, and Academic Artists of America.&nbsp;She was inducted into the IAPS Eminent Pastelists in 2022 and a member of numerous other art organizations.&nbsp; Her work has won many awards across the country and is part of private and public collections.

Seymour Library welcomes back the historian John Cilio. Mr. Cilio will talk on Connecticut's own patriot&nbsp; Roger Sherman. Roger Sherman was invaluable to the young nation as a masterful debater, negotiator and keen legal mind.With his family in New Milford, Connecticut and his work as a lawyer in Litchfield County, Roger Sherman entered politics as he was selected to the Connecticut General Assembly in 1755. Sherman, always unwavering in his support for independence from British rule, is the only person to sign all four great state papers of the United States: the Continental Association, The Declaration of Independence, The Articles of Confederation and the Constitution.Call the Library at 203-888-3903 for more information about this program. Join the Oxford Cultural Arts Commission for Gather &amp; Groove, a welcoming community drum circle led by local facilitator Ken Parker. Together we’ll explore rhythm as a way to connect, relax, and create something spontaneous as a community. Drum circles are open to everyone—whether you’ve been playing percussion for years or have never picked up a drum before. Ken will help guide the circle so that each participant can find their place in the rhythm as the groove builds and evolves. Participants are encouraged to bring a drum, shaker, bucket, or any object that makes a joyful sound. A limited number of instruments will also be available to borrow, so newcomers are always welcome All ages and experience levels are invited to join. Come for a few minutes or stay for the whole circle as we gather, listen, and let the rhythm carry us.

Mr. Cilio will speak on how the idea of an individual's freedom and a nation's freedom grew from concepts present in the Colonists' print media and everyday interactions.The Colonists' concept of freedom grew organically from concepts present in the print media of the time. Mr. Cilio will look into the early days of the Revolution--he will use primary and secondary sources as he focuses in the viewpoints and mindset as the Colonists' gear up to the inevitable fight for independence.The presentation will show how sermons from various states and church ministers, newspaper articles of the time and taverns served as lively hubs that encouraged Colonists to consider rebellion and ultimately self-governance as their best options for respect, independence and meaningful survival on their own collective terms.Call the Library at 203-888-3903 for more information on this program. UCC Southbury invites the community to join them for the 50th Annual Southbury Strawberry Festival on the spacious Church Green, located at 283 Main Street North, in Southbury, CT, to be held on Saturday, June 6th, from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm (rain or shine).
There will be fresh strawberry shortcakes with homemade whipped cream, live music by Band o’ Brothers, Nick Depuy and Adelaide Punkin, assorted baked goods, grilled foods and Food Trucks including Cousins Maine Lobster and Red Apple Catering with Ben &amp; Jerry’s Ice Cream on hand. Also featuring raffle prizes, Kids Zone bouncy house, games and activities, and 40 different vendors and artisans for interested shoppers. 
We encourage all attendees to take advantage of the FREE PARKING SHUTTLE from 22 Old Waterbury Rd (only 500 yards away).

Seymour Library welcomes Valley local Matt Yanarella. Mr. Yanarella will relate the Valley story of Chauncey Judd. The well-known tale is of a local youth who was kidnapped during a raid by the British.
On March 15, 1780 robbers led by a British officer raided Ebenezer Dayton's Bethany Connecticut home while he was away on business. Dayton's wife and children, however, were at home. The robbers after the raid travel west across the Naugatuck River hiding out on their way.
Encountering Chauncey Judd, a newly turned 16 year old, the robbers took Judd hostage and at times considered killing him. Rescued, miles from home, it is said that Chauncey Judd never fully recovered from the trauma of his experience.
The events relating to Chauncey Judd took place in what has since become parts of Oxford, possibly Derby, Naugatuck and Middlebury, Come and hear the full details and all the speculations about this daring kidnapping.

The Seymour Library welcomes again the historian John Cilio. Mr. Cilio will speak of the history of the American symbol of the Liberty Bell.
In the early days of America, bells were a community's mass communication device. They were rung for fires, funerals, festivals and other important events. The bell America calls the Liberty Bell was brought to Philadelphia in 1752 and weighed more than a ton.
When it first rung it was uninspiring in tone and cracked after use. The colonists melted it down and recast the bell, more than once. It endures as a national treasure and one of the six symbols most recognized for representing America.

Oxford Blooms Flower Farm

Join the Oxford Cultural Arts Commission for a special four-part plein air painting series at Oxford Blooms, where artists will gather throughout the summer to capture the changing landscape of this beautiful garden space. By returning to the same location over the course of the season, participants will have the opportunity to document how light, color, and plant life evolve from early summer into late season bloom.Artists are encouraged to bring their own supplies and work in any medium—painting, drawing, watercolor, pastel, or sketching. Whether you’re a seasoned plein air painter or simply curious about trying something new, artists of all levels are warmly welcome.Each session will run 5:30 PM until sunset, allowing participants to enjoy the golden evening light while creating alongside fellow artists in a relaxed, supportive environment.Bring your materials, find a view that inspires you, and watch the summer unfold one painting at a time.
