McKane Scholarship
 
The Great Hill United Methodist Church Board of Trustees has announced&nbsp;that applications are now available for the McKane Scholarship for 2026.

The scholarship has been given annually since 1968 and is in memory of&nbsp;Peter Hall McKane who died tragically at the age of 18 in an automobile accident and his brother, Paul Archer McKane, who died in 2003 from cancer.


The scholarship fund was endowed by the McKane family, friends, and&nbsp;church members.This year a scholarship award of $2,000 will be given to&nbsp;a graduating high school student from Seymour or Oxford, who has been&nbsp;accepted and plans to attend a college, university or other institute of higher&nbsp;learning. &nbsp;Selection criteria includes financial need, personal effort,&nbsp;individual goals reflecting a degree of determination, and academic&nbsp;achievement.

Seymour Library welcomes back the historian John Cilio. Mr. Cilio will be telling of Connecticut's much beloved symbol of the Colony: The Charter Oak.
Connecticut's Charter Oak, an enormous white oak tree located in Hartford stood from at least the 13th century until a storm felled the oak in 1856. In 1662 Connecticut was recognized as a colony by the British and the resulting Charter legitimized the State and gave it autonomy and independence from Britain's rule. In 1687 when the British governor of New England attempted to revoke the Connecticut Colony's original charter, a group of colonial leaders hid the charter within the hollow trunk of this oak tree.&nbsp;
The daring concealment defied Britain's authoritarian rule and preserved Connecticut's self rule until 1692 when the threat ended, This incident established the protective oak as a potent symbol of Connecticut's liberty and democracy. Join Connecticut historian John Cilio as he discusses this early and important example of Connecticut's cultural identity.

Indoor Flea Market
Great Hill United Methodist Church, 225 Great Hill Road, Seymour, will&nbsp;host an Indoor Flea Market on April 25, from 9am to 2 pm in Fellowship Hall.
Over twenty-five vendors, many of them new, will be participating selling flea&nbsp;market items, jewelry, antiques, and hand-crafted items.The Great Hill Mission&nbsp;Group will be holding a bake sale.Refreshments will be available for sale.
The Fellowship Hall is handicap accessible and parking is available.All proceeds&nbsp;are used to fund the church’s Mission Ministries, both locally and around the nation. &nbsp;For more information call Debbie at (203) 828-8751
