The Friends of the Library in Oxford will collect donated used books on Saturday, October 10 from 10 AM-4 PM, and Saturday, October 24 from 10 AM-4 PM for their Book and Bake sale on Tuesday, November 3 through Thursday, November 5.  Book drop off will take place in the parking lot, weather permitting, or in the lobby in case of rain. Donated books should be in nearly new or good condition with no tears, stains, highlighting or writing inside. Textbooks, scientific/technical manuals, encyclopedias, dictionaries, etc. are not accepted as they do not sell. All proceeds from this annual event go to the Oxford Library to support programming and other needs.

Seymour Public Library

The Seymour Library welcomes the historian John Cilio.
Mr. Cilio will be examining one of the enduring symbols of Old New England--along with old houses and stone walls--the tombstones of the Puritans in churchyards and burial places.
Due to the Puritans' theology the tombstone was one of the few artistic works that were considered acceptable in their society and the stones gave form to their thoughts on death, resurrection and state of the soul after death.
Sometimes the stones don't easily give up the names of their makers but with modern researching tools the names of these carvers are being revealed. Mr. Cilio will examine the lives and careers of the makers of these haunting "theology in stone" made for eternity and glory to God.

Title: Landscape in Oils Demo by Frank Bruckman Frank Bruckmann will demonstrate painting a landscape in oils hosted by the Shelton Art League on October 19, 2026 at the Shelton Community Center, 41 Church Street, Shelton, CT, 2FL, Rm #2.&nbsp; The doors open at 11:45 am for refreshments followed by a general meeting and the artist’s demonstration.&nbsp; Frank Bruckmann has spent four decades painting still lifes, figures, landscapes, cityscapes, seascapes, etc. from Monhegan, Maine to Pennsylvania and across the Atlantic Ocean to Europe.&nbsp; He began his studies at the DuCret School of Art in New Jersey and continued with classes at the Art Students League in New York City.&nbsp; In Paris, he studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts and spent nearly a decade in France and Spain, copying the masters in great museums and painting landscapes in the cities and countryside.&nbsp; Residing in New Haven, Bruckmann has found endless subject matter for landscapes in New England but periodically packs his easel and travels farther and wider in his VW camper.&nbsp; He has exhibited in galleries in CT, NJ and New England and his paintings have won awards over the years.&nbsp; Visit http://www.sheltonartleague.org.&nbsp; Guests welcomed.

The Seymour Public Library welcomes magician Chris Lengyel. Mr. Lengyel will give a talk&nbsp; on the life and career of Harry Houdini ending with a tribute performance of magic.
The year of 2026 is the 100th anniversary of the death of Harry Houdini. Despite the decades the name of Harry Houdini is still recognizable to the public as magician, an escape artist, an actor and an acknowledged expert on spiritualism fraud.
Beyond his skill on stage, acting in silent movies and escapes from locked boxes, underwater or being entombed--Houdini became known to modern audiences for his death on Halloween and the seances to contact his spirit by first his widow Bess and later by other magicians and magic societies.
Mr. Lengyel will talk about Houdini's life, career and his influence on magic and pop culture. He will perform magic tricks inspired by Houdini or that Houdini used to perform himself.
