A local dog is recovering after being saved by his owner and local emergency firefighters Wednesday afternoon.

Emergency crews responded to a 911 call on a trail in woods between in Southbury and in Oxford. A man said he was carrying his dog, which had been injured when it ran into a large branch. The branch broke through the dog’s skin, said Oxford Fire Chief .

The dog owner attempted to plug the wound; he carried the dog out of the wooded area, Pelletier said.

Firefighters on a John Deere Gator all-terrain vehicle used triangulation to locate the man’s cell phone; they found him near water and saw the medium-sized dog bleeding profusely, said Pelletier, who didn’t know the dog’s breed.

Firefighters picked up the dog and carried it out of the woods in a blanket; the dog was brought to a local veterinarian and was treated for its injuries, Pelletier said.

He said he received a call later in the day saying that the dog had survived and was doing OK.
