Obituary: Anthony Nello Macciomei

Oxford man was custodian at Weston public schools.

Editor's Note: The following obituary is from the Fairfield-based Lesko Polke Funeral Home, which agreed to share it with Oxford Patch.

Anthony Nello Macciomei, age 60, of Oxford, loving husband of Carol Sullivan Macciomei, passed away suddenly on February 2, 2011 in St. Vincent's Medical Center.

In addition to his devoted wife of nine years, Carol, Tony's memory will be cherished by his children, Tina Cortina, and her husband, Michael, of Easton, James DeSalle, of Shelton, Dawn Matos, of Seymour, Christopher Mainor, of Oxford; his grandchildren, Justin Cortina, Jimmy DeSalle, Jr., Hailee DeSalle, Rachel Matos, Kayla and Tyler Mainor; his sister, Ginger Pogany, and her husband, John, of Trumbull; his brother, Michael Macciomei, and his wife, Jane, of Fairfield; his nieces, Sarah Pogany and Christine Macciomei, and nephew, Jason Pogany; and the many dear friends he had come to love, and in return was loved, throughout his life.

After serving in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War, Tony took over his father's Professional Shoe Repair business, located in Bridgeport's Northend. For the past seven years, Tony was employed by the Town of Weston's school system as a custodian.

A real antique and hot rod car enthusiast, Tony was known for knocking on someone's door to see if "that old car in the garage, or old gas station sign was for sale". Many such collectibles could be found displayed in his "Retro" room. He followed stock car racing, and looked forward to family vacation on Lake George, where riding the race cars and competing with the kids was a must. He enjoyed the family gatherings, "poppin" burgers on the grill, cards games with "his two boys", and playing with his grandchildren, who affectionately called him "poppi". A man of simple pleasures, he looked forward to having corn beef hash with his breakfast special on Sunday morning after attending church with his family.

Services were held last weekend.

Memorial contributions may be directed to: The Macciomei family, care of: Lesko & Polke Funeral Home, 1209 Post Road, Fairfield, CT 06824.
