Obituary: ​James W. Bibb Jr., 79, of Oxford

In October 2004, Jim and his wife Julie were the first residents to move into Oxford Greens.

James W. Bibb Jr., 79, of Oxford, Ct., died peacefully early Wednesday morning at River Glenn Health Care Center with his wife by his side.

He was born in Mount Pleasant, MI on Dec. 16, 1937, the son of James W. Bibb Sr., and Harriet [Bronsteddar] Bibb, of Columbus Ohio. He graduated from Washington Jefferson College in Washington, PA, with a bachelor’s degree in economics in 1959.

He joined ROTC in college and entered the U.S. Army as a first lieutenant. He served during the Korean Conflict for two years and was honorably discharged as a captain. For more than 25 years, Jim was manager of shop operations and production control at the General Electric factory in Bridgeport. He retired in 1996.

He was an avid, lifelong hunter, fisherman, and all-around outdoorsman. He loved deer hunting, fly-fishing and fishing for trout. He played college football as an offensive lineman, but his career was cut short by a concussion and a knee injury. He always loved watching football, as well as UConn basketball.

Jim will be remembered for his outgoing personality, sense of humor, and overall optimistic view of life. He played golf, was a skilled handyman, and he taught all of his step-grandchildren how to play poker and shoot pool. He was also a member of Trout Unlimited.

In October 2004, Jim and his wife Julie were the first residents to move into Oxford Greens. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Julia [Tomey] Bibb; his son James W. Bibb III of Duluth, GA; a daughter, Jill K. Bibb of Boston, MA; a sister, Mary Jane Brewster of Dublin, OH; a brother, John Bibb, of Georgetown, DE; four stepchildren: Ralph Cipriano of Philadelphia, PA; Glenn Cipriano of Anchorage, AK; Paul Cipriano of Windsor, CT; and Lisa Henley of Windsor, NY; four grandchildren, ten step grandchildren, and four step great grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held Friday, July 21st at 11 a.m. at Carpino Funeral Home, 750 Main Street South, in Southbury. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow in New North Cemetery, Woodbury.
