The Oxford High School baseball team mounted a comeback Monday after going down 4-0 early to Notre Dame-Fairfield before losing a heartbreaker in extra innings, 8-5, in the first round of the South-West Conference tournament.
Karl Rodriguez hit a blast over the left-field wall for a three-run homer in the third inning to put Notre Dame up 4-0. Oxford scored three runs in the fifth and two in the sixth to take a 5-4 lead, but Notre Dame tacked one on in the seventh to tie the game. In the eighth, Notre Dame scored three runs and Oxford didn’t answer.
Steve Mahoney led Oxford with three hits and three RBI. Neil Ring had two hits and an RBI for the Wolverines, 14-7.
Kyle Chudoba pitched for Oxford, striking out 10 in six innings.
Oxford has earned a state playoff berth. The state game date has not yet been determined.
