Oxford Couples Face New Marriage License Waiting Period

OXFORD, CT — Couples planning to get married in Oxford will need to leave a little more time between applying for their marriage license and receiving it.

Beginning Oct. 1, a new state law will require a 48-hour waiting period between completing the marriage-license paperwork and the license being issued, according to an alert posted by the town.

The change is part of Public Act 26-141. Oxford posted the notice Friday to give couples advance warning before the requirement takes effect.

Marriage licenses in Oxford are handled by appointment through the Town Clerk's Office at Town Hall, 486 Oxford Road. Couples should call or email the office before visiting.

Connecticut requires both people to appear in person at the vital records office in the town where the marriage will take place. Applicants must provide identification, complete the application and make a sworn statement that the information they supplied is accurate, according to the state Department of Public Health.

The fee for a Connecticut marriage license is $50. Oxford accepts cash or checks made payable to the Oxford Town Clerk but does not accept credit or debit cards.
