Oxford Firefighters Help Fight Southbury Blaze Which Destroys 14 Businesses

Still no cause of early morning fire.

There were no reported injuries at an early morning fire that destroyed 14 businesses in Southbury's "The Commons'" shopping plaza at 250 South Main St.

There is still no word on how the fire started, said Lt. Jason Decremer of the Southbury Volunteer Firefighter’s Association.

After receiving a call at 1:30 a.m., firefighters from Southbury, Woodbury, Oxford and Newtown were able to put the fire out, and as of 8 a.m. were still on scene tearing down remaining hot spots in the wreckage.

Decremer said that all businesses in the complex were touched by the flames, which spread across the entire complex. One of the businesses damaged in the fire is owned by Southbury Fire Chief Rick Lyle.

Oxford, which has a mutual aid agreement with Southbury, sent two trucks and 14 firefighters to help, said Oxford Fire Chief Scott Pelletier.
