Oxford Historical Society to Host Talk on Native Americans in Connecticut

The talk will be presented by Dr. Lucianne Lavin, an anthropologist and archaeologist with over 40 years of experience.

The Oxford Historical Society will hold a book talk on Native Americans in Connecticut on Nov. 9 at 2:30 p.m at St. Peter’s Church.

Dr. Lucianne Lavin, a Connecticut native, will present her book, “Connecticut’s Tribal Communities: An Introduction” describing the initial Native American-European contact situation and the effect of European settlement on the native population.

Following the talk, Dr. Lavin will be available to identify native artifacts found in Connecticut. Attendees will be allowed to bring up to three specimens for identification.

Dr. Lavin is an anthropologist & archaeologist who has over 40 years of research and field experience in Northeastern archaeology and anthropology, including teaching, museum exhibits and curatorial work, cultural resource management, editorial work, and public relations. She is the Director of Research and Collections at the Institute for American Indian Studies, a museum and research and educational center in Washington, CT. She is also a member of the state’s Native American Heritage Advisory Council and the editor of the Journal of the Archaeological Society of Connecticut.

Dr. Lavin received her B.A. from Indiana University, Bloomington and her M.A. and Ph.D. in anthropology from New York University.

She has written over 150 professional publications and technical reports on the archaeology and ethnohistory of the Northeast and has taught anthropology courses at a number of Connecticut and New York colleges.
