Oxford Historical Society Seeks Photos of Ambulance, Fire Corps for Peach Festival

The group will honor Oxford's volunteer first-responders at the 10th annual Peach Festival on Aug. 27.

The Oxford Historical Society will honor Oxford’s volunteer first-responders at the 10th annual Peach Festival on Aug. 27, 4-7 p.m., at St. Peter’s Church Hall. The Society is seeking photos of the men who were listed in the 1960 Litchfield-Hoyt History of Oxford in their account of the starting of these volunteer organizations.

Among the volunteers cited were Frank Allen, Sr., Albert Arcuri, LeRoy Barry, William Beardsley, Frederick Bice, Jesse Booth, Gerald Boudreau, Edwin Cassidy, Stian Christensen, Cecil Cropper and Charles DeBisschop. There was also Frank Duda, Eugene DuPaul, William Fox, Jr., Croft Fray, Leonard Gendler, Raymond Godshall, Arthur Hoyt, Gilbert Ives, Walter Karwacki and Charles Kirk.

Additional volunteers were Andrew Kluzinsky, Joseph Kluzinsky, John Kryszkiewicz, Frank Ladyko, Charles Lyons, John Magda, Joseph Magda, Walter Magda, Robert Moselle and Henry Mozejko as well as Edward Oczkowski, Joseph O'Donavan, Earle Oleson, Edwin Pfeilschifter, Charles Pope, Clark Pope, Joseph Prokop, Franklin. R. Sanford, Ernest Santeere and Cyrus Shelton. Other volunteers cited were Eric Tallberg, Louis Tomlinson, Alvin Treat, Carleton Treat, Robert Treat, Bert Tucker, John VanderLaan, William Wheeler, Harold Woolard and William Yagovane.

Residents can help the Oxford Historical Society honor these men who volunteered to serve as local first-responders in the 1940s and 1950s. More recent fire and ambulance photos are also sought. The Peach Festival will include a variety of photos of Oxford’s first-responders and their equipment. Also featured will be photos of the Hale Peach Farm of Seymour and Oxford, which was a major employer and business in Oxford in pre-World War II Oxford.

The event will include home-made peach shortcake and Rich Farm ice cream. All proceeds from the event will be dedicated to a special fund set up for the permanent support of the Twitchell-Rowland Homestead on Towner Lane.
