Oxford Teams Can Smell State Titles

This has been the most impressive sports season in the short history of Oxford High School athletics. Three teams are vying for state titles - two of them are the No. 1 seeds in their respective divisions.

This week, we will find out if the Wolverines can pull out those revered state titles.

Today, several athletes from both the boys' and girls' track and field teams will compete for state titles at the State Open (all divisions) Championships beginning at 1:30 p.m. at Willow Brook Park in New Britain. Among those with the best opportunities for gold include Taylor Drayton in the shot put, discuss and possibly javelin for the girls, and Cameron Swift for the boys in the 1,600.

The Oxford baseball team is coming off a big come-from-behind win Saturday against Thomaston. The Class S No. 6 seed Wolverines will play in the class tournament semifinals at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Sage Park in New Britain against No. 7 seed Old Lyme, the same school that knocked out Oxford two years ago in the Class S tournament.

The Wolverines softball team is ranked No. 1 in the Class S tournament. The girls will play No. 12 Coventry at 4 p.m. Tuesday at DeLuca Field in Stratford in the semifinals.

And the Oxford boys' volleyball, which is undefeated on the season at 19-0, will play in the Class M semifinals against No. 4 Wolcott Tech at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Bulkeley High School. The boys are ranked No. 1 in the tournament.
