Oxford Volleyball Headed Back to Championship

Last year, the Oxford High School volleyball team wanted to prove that it could compete amongst the state's elite programs.

They did that when they made it to the state finals against Newington. Now, the only thing left to prove is that they are a state championship team.

The Wolverines will have a chance to prove that on Friday night in the Class S state championship game at Shelton High School.

Oxford earned its second straight trip to the final game Tuesday night with a 3-0 victory over Oliver Wolcott Tech of Torrington at Bulkeley High School in Hartford.

"We're going to get back and practice, and go 110 percent in the next two days because this time, we're going to take it," said Senior Captain Bobby Costigan. "And the only way we're going to take it is if we go in there all out on all cylinders."

Costigan led the team with 18 kills and seven blocks, followed by Josh Thorne (10 kills) and Jason Mraz (nine kills). Setter Pat Cragan had 34 assists.

Oxford Coach Jeff Giovacchio said he's proud of his team, which is undefeated on the season at 22-0.

"They pout in the work," he said of the team's season and off-season preparation. "It's been our goal all season to get better than we were last year. And there was only one thing we could do to get better and that was to bring homea state title."

The title game will be at 5 p.m. Friday against Enfield.
