Smoking and self-care: Taking a break

Many smokers report that they enjoy smoking because it helps them to relax, which can make it difficult to think about quitting. After all, when you take a break to have a cigarette, you are often taking a time-out from work, stepping outside, and breathing deeply—all things that help you relax. If you’re thinking about quitting, you can prepare by finding ways to take a break and take care of yourself without cigarettes:

  • Take a walk around the block
  • Work on a puzzle (crossword puzzle, Sudoku, word search)
  • Practice deep-breathing (3 counts in and 3 counts out)
  • Eat a healthy meal or snack
  • Listen to song that makes you feel good
  • Call a friend

What can you do to take a break and take care of yourself without cigarettes?
