Town and School Budget Passed By Voters in Oxford

Minor tax increases and changes to the Oxford School system are expected to come after the town and school budgets pass.

The town and school budgets passed in Oxford on Tuesday, which will lead to small tax increases next year, according to an article from the Republican American.

The 2015-16 town budget of $14.6 million passed 978-302; the school budget of $28.11 million passed 932-354, and $734,000O will be set aside for road repairs passed 1,054 to 229, the article reported.

The school board hopes to spend $136,738 to add full-day kindergarten.

School officials also want to hire a social worker for $77,706 for K-8 grades, but the district currently has one social worker split between the three schools. The schools also expressed concern over rising costs of its special education programs and insurances.

These numbers are an increase, the town budget having gone up $166,684, or 1.1 percent, and the school budget having gone up $464,942, or 1.68 percent higher than what is currently in place, according to the article. Putting these figures into perspective, homeowners can expect about a $22 increase in residential taxes.
