Update: Southbury Residents Injured in Route 67 Crash

Oxford volunteer firefighters extricated a woman from a Honda Pilot sport utility vehicle around 9:15 Friday morning near the Southbury line in Oxford.

Nancy Paul, 44, of 76 N. Fawn Ridge Court, Southbury, was driving northbound toward Southbury on Route 67 near Old State Road No. 1 when a BMW SUV traveling in the opposite direction crossed the center line and struck her car in the front fender, causing heavy damage to both vehicles, police and firefighters said. The BMW was driven by Edward F. Casy, Jr., 62, of 85 S. Fawn Ridge Court, Southbury; he told police he had a medical issue that caused him to pass out and cross the center line, according to a police report.

Both Paul and Casey were transported by Oxford Ambulance to local hospitals. Officials said both sustained substantial injuries and were transported by Oxford Ambulance to local hospitals; their injuries did not appear to be life-threaning, police said.

Firefighters spent 25 minutes cutting the roof off of the Honda Pilot to get the woman out, Fire Chief Scott Pelletier said.

A portion of Route 67 was closed for about an hour while crews cleaned up the accident; workers from the state Department of Transportation spread sand and other cleaning materials on the road to cover oil spills.

The accident remains under investigation, police said.
