📰 News we're reading

1. 0109-0174 Plainville (ct.gov) — Plainville residents are invited to an in-person meeting on Sept. 3 at the Plainville Municipal Center to learn about plans to replace the Crooked Street bridge over the Pan Am Railroad. The $19 million project will raise the roadway profile, improve safety and require various easements, with construction expected to start in summer 2028 depending on funding and approvals.

2. Aquarion to improve water mains in Plainville with cleaning project (newbritainherald.com) — Plainville residents on dozens of local streets will see water main cleaning begin Monday, which may cause low pressure, brief shutoffs, and discolored water during daytime hours. Aquarion says the 11-week project is meant to keep Plainville's water quality high and advises running cold taps until water clears and delaying laundry if discoloration appears. Check if your street is on the first-week schedule.

3. Innovative new programs coming to Plainville schools (newbritainherald.com) — Plainville families can expect major changes in local schools this year, from a renovate-as-new project at Plainville High School to a new Trade Academy offering industry certifications. Elementary and middle school students will also see expanded literacy and language arts programs built around the Science of Reading. District leaders say these initiatives aim to boost both academic mastery and social-emotional growth.

4. Several Connecticut towns make the switch to four-day municipal work weeks (newenglandnewspress.com) — Plainville is one of several Connecticut towns that have shifted municipal offices to a four-day workweek, trading Friday hours for longer days Monday through Thursday. The town's pilot, affecting the Municipal Center, Recreation, and Youth Services, keeps a full 40-hour week while extending evening access for residents. Officials across the state say the change helps hiring and improves service availability.
