Scotland Families Have Fun At Math Night

It’s a Friday night.  You are looking to unwind after a long week.  How do you spend your evening?  Maybe you order a pizza or go see a movie.  For approximately 20 Scotland School families, the answer was to do some math!

On Friday, November 30th, Scotland Elementary 3rd-5th grade families gathered in the school cafeteria to have fun with math.  Families brought snacks and desserts to share, which helped the event feel like a big party! As the students entered the school, they jumped right in with an estimation activity.  There were three different containers with candy and students had to guess the total number of candies in each container.  The activity had a good incentive because the closest estimate for each container would win the candy!

Inside the cafeteria, games and math activities were set up at each table.  Students could complete worksheets with math problems and enter them in a prize drawing.  At other tables, students could play math games such as Racko or Farkle with their families.

A highlight of the evening was Scotland principal, Mark Solomon, demonstrating some mathematical card tricks.  He challenged the kids to figure out the method to each trick.  Overall, it was a fun evening that showed the kids that math can be a great Friday night activity!
