Bear Sighted In Ridgefield: Police

Ridgefield Police Animal Control responded to the report Monday morning.

RIDGEFIELD, CT — Police are reporting that a bear was sighted on High Ridge Avenue Tuesday morning.

The Ridgefield Police animal control officer responded to a report of the bear around 8:00 a.m.

Police say the bear was observed walking on High Ridge Avenue and did not present any danger as it proceeded south on High Ridge Avenue.

The State Department of Energy and Environmental Protection was notified, police said.

There have been 11 bear sightings in Ridgefield from May 28, 2019, through March 4, 2020, according to DEEP.

DEEP's Wildlife Division is reporting an increase in the number of problems with black bears. The primary contributing factor to bear nuisance problems is the presence of easily-accessible food sources near homes and businesses. Fed bears can become habituated and lose their fear of humans. Bears should never be fed, either intentionally or accidentally, DEEP officials advise.

Bear sightings may be reported to the Wildlife Division at 860-424-3011.
