This is a great opportunity to relax, play some games, mingle, nosh and meet other members of the LGBTQ+ community and allies. This is a free event. Feel free to bring some munchies or non-alcoholic beverages to share. This year’s Memorial Day is celebrated on Monday, May 25th.While it is viewed as the official start of summer, Memorial Day is not about picnics, hamburgers and hot dogs or even going to the beach. It is a day that we should show our reverend gratitude to the men, women and the surviving families of those who gave their all and paid the supreme sacrifice for our freedom. They fought for us, they fell for us, let us never forget them. Memorial Day is a very patriotic day, one in which I encourage all to renew your pledge of loyalty to our country and its flag. 
While honoring our fallen heroes on this day, we will also be honoring this year’s Memorial Day Parade’s Grand Marshal, Ridgefield native, George Schuster. <figure><img src="https://cdn20.patchcdn.com/users/44899/20260517/014221/george-schuster-ensignjpeg-page-1___17134220501.jpg" id="George Schuster - Ensign.jpeg_Page_1.jpeg" data-image="George Schuster - Ensign.jpeg_Page_1.jpeg"></figure>
Lt. Schuster was drafted into the Navy after he graduated from the University of Connecticut in 1965. He was commissioned as an Ensign from the Officer Candidate School in Newport, RI. Then he was assigned to be part of the River Assault Flotilla against aggressor forces in the Mekong Delta region of the Republic of Vietnam. After four years of service, George returned home with his wife Sylvia, raised two children and became a Financial Consultant and Asset Manager with Merrill Lynch for 35 years. 
Lt. Schuster is the main speaker at our closing ceremony in Ballard Park immediately following the parade. All are invited to attend.

Historic Trees of Ridgefield will be the topic of the June meeting of the Ridgefield History Club, a free history discussion program of the Ridgefield Historical Society. The program will take place at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, at the Scott House, 4 Sunset Lane.
Tom McManus, Chair of the Ridgefield Town Tree Committee, will lead the informal conversation, which focuses on sharing knowledge of Ridgefield’s past and is broadcast live on the Ridgefield Historical Society’s Facebook page for those who can’t attend in person.

Welcome to Ridgefield Continuing Education! We hold classes year-round and many classes start soon – Day and Evening! – in Person and Zoom.

Studio Knitting for Beginners and Continuing
Keep your mind sharp by learning a new skill and keep your fingers nimble by keeping them moving. This open-knitting format is for both beginners and those who want to continue furthering their knitting skills. The participant will learn the basic stitches and develop skills in maintaining an even tension in the piece. The instructor will provide practice needles and practice yarn until the participant determines a project. After the selection of a project, the participant will purchase the necessary supplies. Projects have included knitting a scarf, sweater, blanket, and handbag. Instructor Lizabeth Doty, a professional educator for over 45 years, has taught some of her hobbies, calligraphy and knitting, to students of all ages for years. Join these fun, productive classes. She is a former teacher. Class size limited. Makeup date, if needed, is added to the end of the session. 
 
There is space in the Tuesday evening class.&nbsp;&nbsp;The Monday afternoon classes have a waitlist; however, it always is good to put your name on the list. Zumba ® with Yolima 
Zumba, a high energy fitness workout, combines Latin and internatonal music with dance moves, creating a fun and effective workout. It incorporates elements of aerobic, interval and resistance training, maximizing calorie burning and cardiovascular benefits. Move to the rhythm of salsa, flamenco, merengue and other global beats. Wear sneakers and bring a water bottle. Instructor Yolima Solano is licensed in Zumba ®, a life long dancer originally from Colombia, who enjoys teaching Zumba ® in the area. She is also a dental hygienist.

LaBlast Fitness ® Cardio Dance Workout with Light Weights You will get your heart rate up and sweat a bit with this aerobic workout created by Louis Van Amstel of Dancing with the Stars. LaBlast® is a partner-free, simple, low impact, safe, cardio / ballroom dance workout for all levels. Some exercises use optional light weights. There is no mat. It's fun and energizing. Beginners are encouraged to attend. Wear sneakers and bring light hand weights (if you have them) and a water bottle. Instructor Denise Nethercott started ballroom dancing in 2011 and has successfully competed as an amateur ballroom dancer with Fred Astaire Dance Studios. She is an Open Gold level dancer with numerous accomplishments. Denise's mission is to combine her passion for ballroom dance with her passion for physical fitness. LaBlast® is a fun, safe exercise program that combines the love of dance with the need to move our bodies. Denise became a certified LaBlast® Fitness instructor in 2019 and started Dance Fit with Denise in 2021. More bio on website.

 Plant Guilds:&nbsp; Native Trees, Shrubs, Perennials and Ground Covers That Grow Well Together Certain plants grow well together. Often called companion plants, today they are known as Plant Guilds.&nbsp; These plants require similar variables of light, soil, moisture/humidity, topography, nutrients, water and many other environmental factors to survive and to thrive.&nbsp; In this class, we will examine a few of the plant guilds that are common in our ecological system (Eco59) in CT and we will get familiar with some specific trees, shrubs and a few perennials and ground covers that should grow well here.&nbsp; If you are preparing to plant or expand your landscape, this class will help you determine which plants to consider in creating a successful garden and in supporting wildlife. Instructor, Jackie Algon is an Advanced CT Master Gardener and Gardening Lecturer, a Board member of the Pollinator Pathway. She has taught many classes in the CT master Gardener program and an adult class at Norwalk Community College on topics related to natives, invasive species, and the Pollinator Pathway. 1 Session $ 31 (Ridgefield Sr./Disab. $ 27) Tue., 5/19 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Veterans Park School.
Mushroom Walk with Mycologist, Zaac Chaves Grab a notebook and join Zaac Chaves on a mycologically focused ecological tour at a state park&nbsp;Ridgefield (a different state park than we have used in the past). During this outing we will identify seasonal mushrooms. You will help us catalog species (including possibly rare sightings) and even help document increasing evidence of climate change locally. No experience required. Zaac Chaves works on species surveys for several sites and sometimes with organizations including Harvard University, the New York Botanical Gardens, and the National Parks Service. We have found several new species at many sites and are also helping recognize others which are rare and disappearing. He also serves as the chief editor of the Boston Mycological Club Bulletin, established in 1897. 1 Session $ 29 (Ridgefield Sr./Disab. $ 25) Sun., 5/31 from 3 to 4:30 p.m. at a public park in Ridgefield. Enjoy a rare opportunity to explore The Glass House and its grounds during the&nbsp;Golden Hour.&nbsp;This special two-hour guided tour offers a&nbsp;golden-hour experience&nbsp;of the site and its many distinct architectural landmarks. In addition, see how the&nbsp;lighting design by Richard Kelly&nbsp;– a pioneer and master of modern architectural lighting and a collaborator with Philip Johnson and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe –&nbsp;transforms the Glass House&nbsp;as the sun sinks in the sky.
This tour runs&nbsp;two hours&nbsp;in duration and is formulated to facilitate&nbsp;photography for personal use.&nbsp;It includes access to the Glass House, Brick House, Painting Gallery, Sculpture Gallery, and Da Monsta, with a&nbsp;three-quarter mile walk over paved, grass, and gravel paths.

This tour runs&nbsp;rain or shine.&nbsp;All&nbsp;ticket sales are final.&nbsp;No refunds will be issued, but tickets may be transferred to another date or program.
All&nbsp;tours depart from the Glass House Visitor Center + Design Store&nbsp;located at 199 Elm Street, New Canaan, CT 06840. Visitors are transported to the site in a shuttle which departs promptly.
