Charter Commission Reviews Suggestions from Public

Most of the public's recommendations were rejected.

RIDGEFIELD, CT --- The Charter Revision Commission met on Saturday, April 21, to review the suggestions they had solicited from the public months earlier. Most of the suggestions were rejected, notably:

  • Term limits
  • Requiring that any proposal that gains 100 or more petition signatures be guaranteed a vote at the Annual Town Meeting.
  • Changing the percentage of voters needed to petition for town meetings
  • Electing selectmen every two rather than every four years
  • Having the Parking Authority report to the Economic Development Commission
  • Integrating the Internet into the town’s petition process
  • Eliminating the office of town treasurer
  • Increasing the number of petition signatures needed to call town meetings for various purposes
  • Lowering the number of petition signatures needed to call town meetings for various purposes

The commission supported a proposal to rename the Economic Development Commission as the Economic and Community Development Commission.

The commission will send their list of recommendations to the selectmen for review (and possible elimination), after which the selectmen will send the final list to the voters for approval or rejection
