RIDGEFIELD, CT --- The Board of Selectmen had their second discussion regarding a controlled deer hunt on public lands, and they reached a consensus to hold a public hearing on the topic in the fall.
At their meeting on April 4, the selectmen first raised the possibility of another town debate vote about deer hunting on town land. At that meeting, members of the Ridgefield town deer committee came before the board and presented a list of 15 town properties where they hope to continue the hunt next fall and winter. Sixty deer were taken in last season's hunt on public lands, roughly a third of the overall number of deer hunted in Ridgefield as estimated by the state.
There are no plans underway that would interfere with the start of the regular deer hunting season this fall, but public debate later this year could impact the 2019 season. In 2006, the controlled hunting of deer on selected town properties was approved by a vote of 531 to 194.
