NEWTOWN, CT — T-Mobile has awarded Newtown a $47,000 grant aimed at revitalizing and expanding the use of the Edmond Town Hall Gymnasium.

Newtown is one of 25 small towns winning T-Mobile Hometown Grants intended to jumpstart vital community development projects, and is the first in Connecticut.

The refresh will help to enhance the functionality of the gymnasium as a community center and multi-purpose space for sports, celebrations, civic events and emergencies/adverse weather events. This 5,000 square foot space with public bathrooms and portable tables and chairs can seat 600 people and serve almost 400 for dining. These funds will expand the gym’s function and usefulness by adding a kitchenette; upgraded electrical, digital and communication capabilities; additional tables and chairs and an improved environment.

The community is welcome to come celebrate on Saturday, Sept. 24 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Edmond Town Hall gymnasium, located at 45 Main Street. The event will be a "town fair" with square dancing and lessons, wrestling demos, face painting, games, prizes, snacks, musical performances, and more. There will also be a formal check presentation, as well as cupcakes and other refreshments.

"We are so pleased to have won a grant that will make it possible to add amenities to this popular space and we want to share our joy with the community," said Stacey Olszewski, chairman of the Friends of Edmond Town Hall, a non-profit fundraising organization to benefit Edmond Town Hall. The Friends applied for the grant for the benefit of Edmond Town Hall.
