Focus on Good Practice: Design-Thinking with Lauren P. Adams

Area teachers and the public are invited to explore design thinking, the process of ideation, research, and prototyping. This course is taught by designer Lauren P. Adams and uses Ellen Lupton’s book, Graphic Design Thinking, to re-imagine three phases of the creative process: defining problems, getting ideas, and creating form. Participants will fully resolve one design challenge and learn techniques to improve creative thinking to better engage students in non-traditional thought processes. The mostly hands-on activities will include mapping associations, interviewing users, sketching sprints, and exploring outdoors.

Lauren P. Adams is a graphic designer from Iowa who lives in Baltimore, MD. She works as a Designer and Adjunct Professor for the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA). Adams wrote, curated, and formatted chapters in Graphic Design Thinking (Princeton Architectural Press and MICA, 2011) alongside editor Ellen Lupton and developed a course at MICA based on the same techniques. In addition to design, Adams enjoys old maps, coffee, and outdoor adventures. www.laurenpadams.com

Educators from all disciplines, as well as the general public, are invited to participate. 0.6 CEUs are available for teachers.
