Heating Oil Spill in Ridgefield; Clean-Up Underway: DEEP

The DEEP was notified to the leak Feb. 19.

The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection is working on cleaning heating oil that leaked from a tank into the Norwalk River, according to DEEP spokeswoman Cyndy Chanaca.

The leak originated from a marble cutting business inside a warerhouse, located at the intersection of Route 7 and Route 102 in Ridgefield. According to Chanaca, about 50-75 gallons of oil leaked into the Norwalk River.

25 booms have been set up to capture the heating oil upstream and downstream of the Depot Street Bridge at the Branchville Train Station.

Work to clean up the spill will continue throughout the week. The remainder of the oil has been pumped from the tank and what is left in the catch basins is being pumped out.

The tank contained 200 gallons of heating oil.

The leak has left a sheen on the river headed to Wilton, which will evaporate, Chanaca said.
