How to celebrate love with a furry Valentine
Pet care expert share fun ideas for sharing Valentine's Day love with a canine companion

There’s nothing quite like the love of a dog: their tail-wagging enthusiasm and unconditional affection make their human companions feel special.
That’s why so many dog lovers want to celebrate the special bond on Valentine’s Day with a gift for their canine best friend. “While your dog may not know that it’s Valentine’s Day, she’ll be happy that you’re giving her extra love and attention,” says Renee Coughlin, of Wilton-based Canine Company.
She offers four ideas sure to please any furry valentine:
1. Buy him some “doggy candy.” A box of chocolates is romantic, but not a good choice for dogs. Instead, pick up some frosted doggy cookies at the local pet store, or create a homemade treat by spreading peanut butter and banana between a couple of dog biscuits. Pop it in the freezer for an hour before serving.
2. Treat her to a spa day. Who doesn’t enjoy a little pampering? After a massaging shampoo, moisturizing treatment and pedicure, she’ll be healthy and happy. Canine Company’s Mobile Pet Spa has a special package for Valentine’s Day -- with strawberry shampoo and a special heart bandana -- so she’ll be extra nice to cuddle with.
3. Offer a new toy. Dogs will have hours of fun investigating a new plush toy with squeakers, especially if it looks like that squirrel they like to chase in the yard. For high-energy dogs, a toss-and-retrieve toy is a great choice.
4. Gift her with some bling. A pretty new collar doesn’t need to be diamond-encrusted to make a dog happy! Choose one that suits her personality. Or opt for a set of matching “best friend” charms – one for pup’s collar and one for mom’s bracelet.
“No matter which gift you choose, doing something special for your dog will strengthen your bond, and make you both happier,” said Coughlin. For more ideas on bonding with your dog, visit Canine Company’s “Speak, Good Blog” blog.
