Monday's Rainout May Force Junior Legion to Play Doubleheader Tuesday

The team needs to win both of its remaining games against Trumbull and Bridgeport to get into the state tournament.

Monday's rainout at Trumbull has put the Ridgefield Junior American Legion baseball team in a predicament where it might have to play a doubleheader on Tuesday against different opponents at different locations.

At 13-12, Ridgefield needs to win both of its remaining games to get into the state tournament, as Zone Four teams have to finish at least three games over .500 to qualify for postseason play.

If Ridgefield is unable to play one of the contests, it will be out of luck, as Tuesday is the last day in which games count in the standings. The team's final regular-season game was supposed to be against Bridgeport on Tuesday.

Coach Anthony Forcelli said his club will return to Trumbull on Tuesday for a 3:30 p.m. start to make up Monday's  postponement.

Then there would be the issue of when—and where—the Bridgeport game would be played. According to Forcelli, there are three possibilities:

  • Play the game in Ridgefield after the Trumbull contest.
  • Play the game at Bridgeport's Seaside Park either before or after the Trumbull contest. Forcelli indicated he would be okay with a 1 p.m. start in Bridgeport.
  • A forfeit by Bridgeport. This could be a possibility because Bridgeport is out of state tournament contention and might not have enough players to field a team.

Ridgefield has been on a late-season run, winning three straight games and four of its last five to keep its state  tournament hopes alive. On Sunday, Ridgefield posted an impressive 12-2 victory over second-place Stamford.
